Museum Discoveries

What a magical day! We went to the Melbourne Museum and the sun was shining. We went in to the Bugs Alive exhibit and looked at an ANT COLONY. We found worker ants, an ant with wings and larva. Then we found the Tarantula section and we drew a female redback spider. It was amazing to see the webs that the spiders can spin with their silk. After that we explored the stick insect section. We counted 67 stick insects in one exhibit. There was a huge insect that looked like 'Lily' (our class pet).
While at the Museum we found answers to our wonderings -
  • there were 'real' insects
  • we did get scared by some of the spiders!
  • we saw the biggest beetle in the world
  • Will found a black house spider
We had a wonderful day exploring aspects of Science and Life.

WOW! Is this Lily?

Wow Just Juniors
You are much braver that I would be at the Bugs Alive exhibit! I am not a fan of anything that creeps, crawls or slithers around. What was the most interesting insect that you saw at the exhibit? Where does the 'biggest beetle in the world' live? (I hope it is not found in Blackburn South!)
Thanks for sharing your great discoveries

It was a wonderful day of learning and discovering new things. I was very excited to see a water boatman. What was your greatest discovery at the Museum?
You certainly did see a lot of stick insects!

Dear Mrs Swan and Prep S,
The biggest beetle is the goliath beetle. They can be found in the tropics of Africa. These beetles are the heaviest and strongest beetles in the world.
