Possum Nesting Boxes

Part of our action for our Inquiry this term was to make nesting boxes for possums which we will donate to a local wildlife shelter. We were very lucky to have Kylie from Bunnings come to our classroom to help us. She cut out all of the wood and supplied all of the tools for us to use. We had heaps of fun using the hammers and screwdrivers to put the boxes together. We found out some interesting information about the boxes from Kylie - she told us that we had to put carpet under the lid of the boxes to keep the bees away. With the carpet the bees will not be able to make their hives because the carpet will not allow them to stick. We can't wait to present our boxes and the money we raised to Adriana tomorrow for her shelter. Thank you so much for your help Kylie and Bunnings! Possum Boxes on PhotoPeach

Our Visit from the Fire Fighters

Over the last two days we have been lucky to have some of the fire fighters from Box Hill visit us. They told us about 'good' and 'bad' fires. We found out what to do if we smell smoke in our house or if a smoke alarm goes off. We also found out what to do if our clothes catch on fire. The fire fighters showed us their truck and how to use their water hoses. We had heaps of fun! Thank you for visiting us. Our Local Firemen on PhotoPeach

Father Tony

Our Parish Priest, Father Tony, came to see us yesterday.

He told us that there are 4 main colours that he wears when he says Mass. They are white, red, purple and green.
Father Tony told us that 'white' is the most special colour in the Church.
He said that his friends and family bought some of his vestments for him but he can also buy them in Camberwell.

Father Tony told us that he arrived in Australia from Holland when he was 10 and that it took him 8 years to become a priest.
We loved listening to his story about his pet goat.

Thank you Father Tony for visiting us.
We can't wait for you to give us a tour of your house and the Church!

What Does a Baby Need to Grow and Change?

This term we have been exploring the BIG question 'What do living things need to grow and change?'
Yesterday one of our school mums shared with us how she helped her baby grow. We discovered that babies have similar needs to baby animals.
1. They need food and something to drink
2. They need somewhere to sleep (shelter)
3. They need exercise (tummy time)
4. They need friends (mum and dad)
5. They need to be immunised to keep them healthy.

We also found out some other interesting things about babies.
1. It is important not to touch a baby's head because it is soft
2. Parents should never leave their baby by itself in the bath
3. Babies need to sleep on their backs
4. Babies don't have enough muscles in their arms to push the blankets off their faces
5. Babies cry when they want something
6. Babies are not able to bite and chew apples

Bubbles, Bubbles, Bubbles!

Blowing Bubbles

This week we are finding out about 'Bouncy Ben' in Letterland. We thought that we would go outside to blow bubbles and then write about why we like making bubbles. Here are our sentences!

Our Fabulous Fish!

Over the last couple of days we have been creating colourful fish because we are learning the 'f' sound this week. We used foil, tissue paper and different types of sparkly paper to paste on to our fish. Then we used crayons to draw seaweed and we painted over this with blue dye to make the ocean. Our final step was to cut our fish out, put an eye on them and then paste the fish on to our ocean scene. They look amazing - we are very proud of ourselves! Fabulous Fish on PhotoPeach

Rainbow Day

Today we held our 'Rainbow Day' fundraiser to raise money so we can buy the materials to make nesting boxes for Wildlife Victoria. We had a wonderful day with everyone wearing their favourite colours! Thank you to everyone in our school community for donating gold coins. We raised $265.60. Both Prep classes counted the money raised - the classes discovered that it was easier to count the money in $10 lots. We look forward to making our boxes but we really need the help of families to cut out the timber and to help us put the boxes together. Can you help us? Money, Money, Money! on PhotoPeach

Heavy or Light?

We have been exploring how to 'heft' and use balance scales to find out the weight of items. Today we had 5 pieces of vegetables/fruit to heft and guess which were the heaviest items to the lightest items. We then drew our items in order in our books (potato, carrot, onion, apple, brussel sprout). Finally, we used the scales to check our guesses. Some of us discovered that our guesses were right but some of us had to redraw our items from heaviest to lightest. Heavy or Light? on PhotoPeach

As our chickens have grown we have seen many changes. Please watch this video and let us know what changes you can see.

Taking Action!

Our Inquiry this term has been about caring for animals. We have had chickens and rabbits in our classroom, visited the RSPCA, listened to a vet nurse and listened to a volunteer from Wildlife Victoria. Each of these expereinces gave us ideas of what we could do to help animals. Our class has decided to raise money to buy materials to make 'nesting' boxes for a wildlife shelter. The first part of our action is to advertise our 'Rainbow Day' to the school community. This day will be used to raise money to buy the building materials. We collaborated with our buddies today to find out how to use a computer program to create the heading for our poster. We printed these headings out and then placed these on our posters. Working Collaboratively! on PhotoPeach

New Maths Discoveries!

In Maths today we played two games. The first game was 'Add the Total'. We rolled three dice and we had to add the dots on the dice together to get our total. We discovered that it was quicker to count on from the largest number.

The second game we played was 'Teddy Bear Take Away'. We found out how to record this game.

What Can I See?

We have been watching our chickens grow over the last 8 days and as they have grown we have recorded these changes in our 'Chicken Journals'.

Today we discovered that the chickens are growing feathers on their wings and their legs and feet are getting bigger!

Buddy Day

Last Friday our class spent some time with our buddies to celebrate 'Buddy Day' and to learn the Buddy handshake. We had a great time and our buddies even presented us with our own bears! Buddy Day on PhotoPeach
