St. Luke the Evangelist Church

We are learning about belonging to God's Family so we went to visit our Church. We know that this is a sacred place where people gather to pray and share a meal. Do you know the names of the sacred objects in our slideshow? We Belong to the St. Luke's Community on PhotoPeach

Who is Harry O'Brien?

Yesterday we were very lucky to have Harry O'Brien visit our school. He is an Australian Rules footballer and he plays for Collingwood. Harry came to speak to us about UNICEF. This is an organisation that he works with to make sure that children from all around the world get their basic rights of food, shelter and education. He told us that we could be anything that we want to be! Thank you Harry for coming to visit us.

What is a surface?

We investigated the concept of 'surface' in Maths today. We went outside to feel different surfaces. We discovered that the word 'surface' refers to the outside of something. What is a surface? on PhotoPeach

Here They Come!

Our chicks are still hatching! We now have three different colours - yellow chicks, caramel chicks and black chicks. We have discovered that the incubator keeps the eggs warm so that they can hatch because we don't have a hen to sit on the eggs. We are wondering how many more eggs will hatch? Guess Who is Coming?

We have new class members coming to our room next week. We had a treasure hunt today to solve the mystery.
Can you guess who they are?

Caring for Wildlife

Today we had a guest speaker from Human Seeds who told us how she cared for injured wildlife. Adrianna has a shelter at her house where she cares for possums, kangaroos, wombats, echidnas and fruit bats. She told us that there are 4 dangers to wildlife. They are -
1. Roads (cars and trucks)
2. Pets (cats and dogs)
3. Entanglement (animals caught in nets, fences and rubbish)
4. Habitat Destruction (chopping down trees)

Adrianna gave us some solutions to these dangers.
1. She said that we had to watch out when we are driving
2. We need to keep cats inside and keep dogs on a leash
3. We should use colourful nets and pick up our rubbish
4. When we chop down trees we should replace them with indigenous plants to provide food and shelter for the animals.
We have now found out how to care for our pets from the RSPCA and how to care for the wildlife from Adrianna.

What action are we going to take to help these animals?

RSPCA Song

Today we learnt a song about caring for animals. Here it is!

RSPCA Visit

Today we went on our first excursion at school. We caught the bus to the RSPCA. We were wanting to find out how they helped animals. Jenny and Emily were able to tell us all about the RSPCA and the work that they do. Our class also got to meet and feed some of the animals in the 'barn'. We also discovered that we are looking after our rabbits in the right way. One thing that we will remember from our visit is that all animals need food, water, friends, shelter, exercise and to see a vet so that they can be healthy. Some of the things that we discovered today were - Bunnies can have red eyes. (Ava) We found out how to feed farm animals. (Nyandit) The RSPCA keeps animals safe. (Siena A) The RSPCA rescues animals. (Samuel) The RSPCA helps to find animals new homes. (Eli) We discovered that the cow and goat won't bite us because they only have bottom teeth. (Nyandit) The cats at the RSPCA can explore in the barn and outside. (Jordi) We can help the RSPCA by donating blankets, food and money. (Jennifer) We discovered the 'stray' animals do not have a home or owner. (Prep D) We had a fun time!

Watch Them Go!

We let our bunnies out today to have some exercise in our classroom. We were amazed at how fast they hopped around - some even hopped out of our circle. Mrs David and Mrs Kennedy had to keep catching them and putting them back. It was heaps of fun! We only have them for another week and we will miss them heaps. How Fast Can They Move? on PhotoPeach

Which Total is Bigger?

In one of our Maths sessions this week we played a card game to explore adding numbers together to reach a total. We also discovered that it is quicker to count in groups of 2 when counting collections. Another discovery we made was to count on from the largest number to find out the total. This was a great game!

WOW! Look how they have grown!

We have now had Ruby and her 7 kittens in our class for two weeks. We can't believe how much they have grown. When we first got them they had no fur and their eyes were closed. Now they have black and grey fur and their eyes are open. They are so cute to watch as they bounce around their hutch.

1 to 10

We have been learning how to write the numbers from 1-10. Today we made the numbers out of playdoh. It was great fun! Playdoh Numbers on PhotoPeach

Toothpick Towers

We made toothpick towers.  It was really tricky!  We discovered that if we used too much playdoh our towers fell over.  We tried using icypole sticks but our towers still kept falling over. We went on a learning walk to Prep K and asked them for advice on how to build a toothpick tower.  Our friends in Prep K found this activity tricky too!

Ruby and her cute kittens

We are starting to see more of Ruby's kittens. We have enjoyed watching them twitch their noses and stretch. We talked about what we need to do to care for rabbits, dogs and mice and discovered that a pet dog would take the most work!

Our Fluffy Visitors!

To be reviewed ....

Very Interesting!

We found it amazing that one of our Quadblogging Schools (Nightingale Primary) is also having alot of rain at the moment! They are very lucky because they can wear their Wellington Boots (gumboots) to school! We thought that it was incredible that two schools on opposite sides of the world were experiencing the same type of weather.
