Caring for Wildlife

Today we had a guest speaker from Human Seeds who told us how she cared for injured wildlife. Adrianna has a shelter at her house where she cares for possums, kangaroos, wombats, echidnas and fruit bats. She told us that there are 4 dangers to wildlife. They are -
1. Roads (cars and trucks)
2. Pets (cats and dogs)
3. Entanglement (animals caught in nets, fences and rubbish)
4. Habitat Destruction (chopping down trees)

Adrianna gave us some solutions to these dangers.
1. She said that we had to watch out when we are driving
2. We need to keep cats inside and keep dogs on a leash
3. We should use colourful nets and pick up our rubbish
4. When we chop down trees we should replace them with indigenous plants to provide food and shelter for the animals.
We have now found out how to care for our pets from the RSPCA and how to care for the wildlife from Adrianna.

What action are we going to take to help these animals?

RSPCA Song

Today we learnt a song about caring for animals. Here it is!

RSPCA Visit

Today we went on our first excursion at school. We caught the bus to the RSPCA. We were wanting to find out how they helped animals. Jenny and Emily were able to tell us all about the RSPCA and the work that they do. Our class also got to meet and feed some of the animals in the 'barn'. We also discovered that we are looking after our rabbits in the right way. One thing that we will remember from our visit is that all animals need food, water, friends, shelter, exercise and to see a vet so that they can be healthy. Some of the things that we discovered today were - Bunnies can have red eyes. (Ava) We found out how to feed farm animals. (Nyandit) The RSPCA keeps animals safe. (Siena A) The RSPCA rescues animals. (Samuel) The RSPCA helps to find animals new homes. (Eli) We discovered that the cow and goat won't bite us because they only have bottom teeth. (Nyandit) The cats at the RSPCA can explore in the barn and outside. (Jordi) We can help the RSPCA by donating blankets, food and money. (Jennifer) We discovered the 'stray' animals do not have a home or owner. (Prep D) We had a fun time!

Watch Them Go!

We let our bunnies out today to have some exercise in our classroom. We were amazed at how fast they hopped around - some even hopped out of our circle. Mrs David and Mrs Kennedy had to keep catching them and putting them back. It was heaps of fun! We only have them for another week and we will miss them heaps. How Fast Can They Move? on PhotoPeach

Which Total is Bigger?

In one of our Maths sessions this week we played a card game to explore adding numbers together to reach a total. We also discovered that it is quicker to count in groups of 2 when counting collections. Another discovery we made was to count on from the largest number to find out the total. This was a great game!
