Exploring Numbers

We used calculators to make and read a number and then we used the popsticks to make that amount. At the end of the lesson we discovered that this activity helped us to read and make numbers and we found out how to clear a number from the screen on the calculator. We also had to work as a team that shares and cooperates. Finding out about numbers! on PhotoPeach

What Do Good Learners Do?

The Prep classes discussed what they thought 'good'learners did. The children then used TuxPaint to create pictures for their words. They then used voicethread to record their voices answering the question - 'What do good learners do?'

Our Patterns!

After looking at the patterns around our school yesterday we had a go at creating our own patterns. We used circles and squares to make our patterns and we discovered that there was more than one way to create a pattern with circles and squares. We also remembered that a pattern kept repeating over and over again. Here are our patterns!

St. Patrick's Day

We all wore green to school to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. The Social Justice Team held a cake stall at playtime to raise money for Caritas. We ate all things green - jelly, cordial, cakes, icecream, biscuits! We even had our faces painted. It was a great day! St. Patrick's Day on PhotoPeach

The Lost Sheep

We went outside to play a game 'The Lost Sheep' game today. One of us was the Good Shepherd, two of us were wolves and the rest of us were sheep. The sheep wandered out on to the grass and they followed the Good Shepherd who kept them safe from the wolves. At the end of the game we shared how we felt at different stages of the game. The Good Shepherd felt proud and wanted to protect the sheep from the wolves. The sheep felt safe but then they were scared when the wolves came and the wolves were angry because the Good Shepherd kept them away from the sheep. We discovered that the message from this 'Parable' is that God will always love us and be with us when we need him.

What is Happening to Hairy Harry?

When we made our Hairy Harry heads we created some of them differently. Some had no soil, others no water and another one had no light. Now it is time to go and see how they are going.
Do you think that the seeds can grow if they are missing either water, soil or light?

Let's see how they are going!

This Hairy Harry has no soil.

This Hairy Harry has no water.

This Hairy Harry has no light.

This Hairy Harry has soil, water and light.

What can you tell about the importance of water, soil and light to the growth of a plant?
Why does Hairy Harry have yellow hair when he doesn't get any light?

Where Are We?

We went outside to find out more about 'location' words.
We sat on the hill.
Nyandit put her hat in her bag.
We sat on the seat. We stood beside the flag pole.
We stood behind the tree.
We stood in front of the wall.
We stood on the play equipment.

This Is Me!

Marvellous Monsters

This week we have been learning about words that begin with 'm' and how to write 'm'. One of our activities was to create our own monsters. We hope that you don't get too scared! Marvellous Monsters on PhotoPeach

Finding Out About Each Other

We are beginning to find out about each other through play. We are having fun playing kitchens, playing with cars, drawing, building and threading! During our activities we are learning how to cooperate, share, solve problems and find out about each others talents.

I Wonder ...

We are continuing to  wonder about things in our environment. This week we wondered how things would look through different coloured glasses so we made our own glasses - some with red lenses and others with green lessons.
Before we made our glasses we looked through our classroom window and spoke about what we could see in the playground. We saw many things, such as  green grass, orange litter, blue monkeybars, a yellow steering wheel, blue running track and brown crunchy leaves.
We made our glasses and then went outside to explore these objects through the different coloured glasses.
We discovered a few things -
  • the green lenses didn't change the colour of things as much as the red lenses
  • the green colours looked purple through the red lenses
  • the clouds look pink through the red glasses
  • the blue rubbish bins looked purple through the red lenses
We are going to mix paints next week so we are beginning to wonder how these colours will change.

Clean Up St. Lukes!

On Friday we worked with our Environment Team leaders to clean up the quadrangle of our school for 'Clean Up Schools Day'. We found different types of rubbish - food, wrappers, paper, apple cores and lollipop sticks. Our school looks alot cleaner after our BIG clean up!

Blocks in Socks

Today we discovered the difference between 'most' and 'least' when we had to order the socks with blocks from 'least' to 'most'. We also found out that 'guessing' is the same as 'estimating' when we had to feel and predict how many blocks there were in each of the socks. We had heaps of fun doing this activity.
